Being an ornamental sculptor
is not just one profession, but many.
Etienne Rayssac – appointed Maître d’Art Ornamental Sculptor in 2008 – is an interior architecture and design specialist, calling on his expertise, his creativity and, above all, his core skill : sculpture.
Following his studies at the Bordeaux Beaux-Arts Academy, the Ecole Boulle design school and La Grande Chaumière art school in Paris, he joined the Atelier Fancelli Père: “I was trained in a studio which worked on National Heritage buildings and period décors. I believe that, in order to master the multi-faceted codes of my profession, you need to have seen any number of things in castles, palaces, hotels, town houses … observed them in their own environment as well as in studios. You need not only to have seen things but to have seen them made, and made them yourself.”
Today, Etienne Rayssac has an exceptional savoir-faire, mastering scrupulously ancestral production techniques, aesthetics and style, combined with his experience in the choice – and exceptionally high quality – of the materials and finishes he works with. He works not only on National Heritage schemes but also on more modern assignments and even large-scale projects, from the design stage right through to completion.
I have tremendous respect for extraordinary places. It is a great honour for me to be involved in them, even if I am never alone : it is always teamwork. Each period in time has its own demands ; our minds and our hands soak up this savoir-faire and we find ourselves in another world.
